Abstract

Abstract The lipophilicity of a large set of solute was measured by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography using two novel stationary phases, namely an octadecyl polyvinyl-alcohol copolymer (ODP) and an octyl-silane (OS) phase. Solvatochromic analysis of the results showed the ODP/buffer system to bear a close resemblance to 1-octanol/buffer system. In contrast, the OS phase is a stronger H-bond acceptor than 1-octanol and will lead to overestimating the lipophilicity of strong H-bond donor solutes.
