The columns of stacked 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole (btd) molecules present in the crystal structure of the free ligand are maintained in the lattices of the 2D coordination polymers [CuCl2(btd)]n and [CuCl(btd)]n, demonstrating how the coordination bonds and aromatic stacking interactions can be forged into a supramolecular tool that has not yet been employed in a systematic manner.
