Abstract The influence of the lone methyl and the geminal diniethyl group (contained in all aliphatic natural terpene compounds) on the acidcatalyzed cyclization is examined. For this purpose, terpenelike model substances of the geranyl and the lavandulyl series are prepared, in which these substituents are entirely or partly absent. The behaviour of these substances under conditions which have been proved favorable for ring closure of the corresponding normal terpene compounds has been studied.
