We comment on two theories of the homogeneous linewidths of optically active impurities in glasses. Both theories attribute the linewidth to the interaction of the impurities with nearby thermally activated tunneling systems. They differ in the way they incorporate the effects of the random spatial distribution of the tunneling systems.
