The hetero metallic alkoxide ErAl3(OPri)12 has been prepared and its molecular structure has been established by single-crystal X-ray diffraction technique. The Er atom is encapsulated by three Al(OPri)4− units, giving a molecule with an isolated Er atom. IR studies reveal a striking resemblance between the solid and dissolved compounds, indicating that their structures are similar. This fact makes the compound especially suitable as a precursor for preparations of high purity optical materials.
