the more superficial muscle groups. It is known from the experiments of Kellgren, McGowan, and Hughes (1948) that pain in such structures is related to the local tempera- ture. Such an effect must presumably depend on absorption of adrenaline into the general circulation, as penetration to such tissues by direct spread would be unlikely. This would explain the identical relief felt on both sides when adrenaline is applied to only one half of the back (Bywaters, 1951).
