Abstract

It is shown that the critical load to produce a ring crack varies with the coefficient of friction as well as with the normal load. The critical load is proportional to the radius of the ball indenter at small radii and is proportional to the square of the radius at large radii. The linear range decreases with increase in the coefficient of friction.
