Abstract Using annular lenses in scanning acoustic microscopy, the attenuation coefficients for several materials were determined from the calculated V ( z ) interference‐free curves. The dependence of such coefficients on Rayleigh velocities as well as on operating frequencies was then investigated to establish empirical relations between these parameters.
