SUMMARY Benign epilepsy in children with interictal Rolandic spikes is described. The seizures are partial or generalized motor ones, usually during sleep; less often they are brief hemifacial seizures with or without loss of consciousness. The interictal EEG contains a Rolandic focus of slow spikes or of spike‐waves with the spikes predominating. At the onset, other forms of paroxysmal abnormality may be seen transiently in the EEG. The tendency to spread is not pronounced. The neuropsychiatric findings are virtually normal throughout the evolution of the disease. No objective examination has demonstrated cerebral lesions. Cure without sequelae is nearly invariable, either at puberty or several years earlier. Patients with benign epilepsy with Rolandic spikes are more numerous than patients with petit mal epilepsy.
