Abstract

THE treatment of patients with ethylene glycol poisoning includes both hemodialysis and ethanol.1 2 3 However, there are no data on the pharmacokinetics of ethylene glycol in human beings or on the changes in these kinetics effected by therapy. In a patient who ingested a potentially lethal dose of this toxin, serial determinations of ethylene glycol before and during these therapeutic interventions allowed us to calculate these data. In addition, we determined the oral doses of ethanol needed to achieve effective enzymatic blockade of ethylene glycol metabolism during the various phases of therapy.Case ReportA 51-year-old, 75-kg man with no history . . .
