Abstract Confocal microscopy is currently being used to obtain images with higher lateral and axial resolution than conventional light microscopic techniques. Most current confocal microscopic applications describe the use of in vitro preparations. The tandem scanning microscope (TSM) can be applied in the in vivo microscopic evaluation of living tissue. This article discusses in vivo applications of the TSM in the study of human teeth and skin.
