Magnetic measurements have been made from 6.1° to 300°K on chemically ordered RAu4(R=Er, Tm, Yb) with the bct MoNi4 structure. No magnetic ordering was found for any of the compounds in this temperature range. The temperature dependence of the reciprocal susceptibility for each specimen satisfied an equation which included both Curie-Weiss and temperature-independent terms. The paramagnetic Curie temperature for each specimen had a negative value and the magnetic moments of the rare earths were those appropriate to the trivalent ion. An RKKY calculation indicates that ErAu4 and TmAu4 should magnetically order at ∼5° and below 2°K, respectively.
