Infrared diagnostics of cracks in railway carriage wheels

Abstract

A method for detecting a through crack in a disc of a railway wheel by an infrared camera or a thermal imager is developed. It is based on registering of the evolution of the temperature distribution on the surface of the wheel disc during its heating. The experimental data considered confirm the possibility of crack detection by the infrared technique.
