Treatment outcome of patients with brain metastases from malignant germ cell tumors

Abstract

Among patients with brain metastases at the time of diagnosis of an MGCT, cisplatin-based chemotherapy resulted in a 5-year cause specific survival rate of 45%, with cerebral radiotherapy having limited impact. The 5-year cause specific survival rate for all patients with brain metastases after cisplatin-based chemotherapy was 12%, but increased to 39% in patients with an isolated brain recurrence. Cerebral radiotherapy (and neurosurgery) represent essential treatment modalities for patients in whom brain metastases are diagnosed after induction chemotherapy.
