Abstract

A theorem of Kolmogorov states that there is a positive constant <inline-formula content-type="math/mathml"> <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" alttext="upper K"> <mml:semantics> <mml:mi>K</mml:mi> <mml:annotation encoding="application/x-tex">K</mml:annotation> </mml:semantics> </mml:math> </inline-formula> such that if <inline-formula content-type="math/mathml"> <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" alttext="f overTilde"> <mml:semantics> <mml:mrow class="MJX-TeXAtom-ORD"> <mml:mover> <mml:mi>f</mml:mi> <mml:mo stretchy="false">~<!-- ~ --></mml:mo> </mml:mover> </mml:mrow> <mml:annotation encoding="application/x-tex">\tilde f</mml:annotation> </mml:semantics> </mml:math> </inline-formula> is the conjugate function of an integrable real valued function <inline-formula content-type="math/mathml"> <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" alttext="f"> <mml:semantics> <mml:mi>f</mml:mi> <mml:annotation encoding="application/x-tex">f</mml:annotation> </mml:semantics> </mml:math> </inline-formula> on the unit circle then <inline-formula content-type="math/mathml"> <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" alttext="m left-brace StartAbsoluteValue f overTilde EndAbsoluteValue greater-than-over-equals lamda right-brace less-than-over-equals upper K StartAbsoluteValue EndAbsoluteValue f StartAbsoluteValue EndAbsoluteValue Subscript 1 Baseline slash lamda comma lamda greater-than 0"> <mml:semantics> <mml:mrow> <mml:mi>m</mml:mi> <mml:mo fence="false" stretchy="false">{</mml:mo> <mml:mrow class="MJX-TeXAtom-ORD"> <mml:mo stretchy="false">|</mml:mo> </mml:mrow> <mml:mrow class="MJX-TeXAtom-ORD"> <mml:mover> <mml:mi>f</mml:mi> <mml:mo stretchy="false">~<!-- ~ --></mml:mo> </mml:mover> </mml:mrow> <mml:mrow class="MJX-TeXAtom-ORD"> <mml:mo stretchy="false">|</mml:mo> </mml:mrow> <mml:mo>≧<!-- ≧ --></mml:mo> <mml:mi>λ<!-- λ --></mml:mi> <mml:mo fence="false" stretchy="false">}</mml:mo> <mml:mo>≦<!-- ≦ --></mml:mo> <mml:mi>K</mml:mi> <mml:mrow class="MJX-TeXAtom-ORD"> <mml:mo stretchy="false">|</mml:mo> </mml:mrow> <mml:mrow class="MJX-TeXAtom-ORD"> <mml:mo stretchy="false">|</mml:mo> </mml:mrow> <mml:mi>f</mml:mi> <mml:mrow class="MJX-TeXAtom-ORD"> <mml:mo stretchy="false">|</mml:mo> </mml:mrow> <mml:mrow class="MJX-TeXAtom-ORD"> <mml:msub> <mml:mrow class="MJX-TeXAtom-ORD"> <mml:mo stretchy="false">|</mml:mo> </mml:mrow> <mml:mn>1</mml:mn> </mml:msub> </mml:mrow> <mml:mrow class="MJX-TeXAtom-ORD"> <mml:mo>/</mml:mo> </mml:mrow> <mml:mi>λ<!-- λ --></mml:mi> <mml:mo>,</mml:mo> <mml:mi>λ<!-- λ --></mml:mi> <mml:mo>></mml:mo> <mml:mn>0</mml:mn> </mml:mrow> <mml:annotation encoding="application/x-tex">m\{ |\tilde f| \geqq \lambda \} \leqq K||f|{|_1}/\lambda ,\lambda > 0</mml:annotation> </mml:semantics> </mml:math> </inline-formula>. This number is also shown to be the weak type (1, 1) norm of the Hilbert transform operator on functions defined on the real line. The proof uses P. Levy’s result that Brownian motion in the plane is conformally invariant.
