Molybdenum pentafluoride may be prepared by the action of molybdenum hexafluoride on molybdenum at 60°. Molybdenum hexafluoride and tetrabromide react to form molybdenum(V) bromide tetrafluoride. There is evidence for the existence of molybdenum(VI) tetrabromide difluoride and other volatile molybdenum(VI) bromide fluorides. Both the pentafluoride and the bromide tetrafluoride form 1:2 adducts with acetonitrile and pyridine; 1:1 adducts are also formed between the pentafluoride and ammonia, dimethyl ether, and dimethyl sulphide.
