Abstract A homologous series of heterocyclic liquid crystals containing the quinoline unit have been synthesized and characterized. These compounds show a smectic phase at low temperatures. The quinoline unit containing lone pair electrons introduces a significant dipole moment resulting in attractive forces to form a smectic phase. The heterocyclic structure may also break the centrosymmetry of the core of the molecule, which may be favored in the application of displays and nonlinear optics.
