Abstract

Advances in radiological imaging studies have simplified the diagnosis of Budd-Chiari syndrome (BCS), but many challenges still remain with respect to therapy. Patients with BCS who have a hematological disorder are an especially difficult group to treat. Major issues related to the treatment of BCS in these patients include the role of thrombolytic therapy, anticoagulation, and shunt surgery or transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunts (TIPS); the indications for and risks of liver transplantation; as well as control of the underlying hematological disease.
