Cycloheptadiene with decacarbonyldimanganese yields tricarbonyl(cycloheptadienyl)manganese, converted by hydride abstraction into tricarbonyl(cycloheptatriene) manganese tetrafluoroborate. Additions of a range of anions to this salt are descibed. The dienyl complex adds acetylium ion but the product decomposes to the metal-free acetylcycloheptadiene on hydrolysis. Replacement of one carbonyl group is effected by irradiation of the dienyl complex in the presence of triphenylphosphine.
