Issues in the psychological care of pediatric oncology patients.

Abstract

As a result of the enormous changes in mode and efficacy of treatment, a new population with distinct psychological needs is rapidly developing: the pediatric cancer survivor. The rigors of the medical treatment, pattern of hospitalizations, remissions, and relapses, and the ever-present fear of death all require enormous psychological adjustment on the part of patients and their families. Although each case presents a unique picture of strengths and difficulties, certain similarities in problems exhibited by these children are beginning to be seen.
