Purple patch for nanoparticles! A membrane protein crystal patch (purple membrane; PM; inset) from halobacteria is genetically engineered to display Cys or His groups on the membrane surface with nanoscale symmetry. The engineered PM forms stable 2D crystals in the cell membrane and, when used as a template, exhibits designed reactivity for inorganic nanoparticles (TEM image) while promoting the formation of a nanoscale 2D particle assembly.
