Midwifery has come a long way since the early days of this century and the first Registration of Midwives Act in 1902. A three month training has been replaced by a three year degree and diploma courses run in higher education institutions. Labour can be pain free — women can be supported through the whole of their child bearing experience by the same knowledgeable, well educated, professional midwife. The condition of her fetus can be monitored throughout her pregnancy by the most sophisticated machinery.
