Transit, the navigation satellite system of the U.S. Navy, has used an electric propulsion system on its NOVA-class satellites since 1981. This paper describes the Teflon pulsed-plasma propulsion system and its control. The history of the incorporation of electric propulsion in the design of the spacecraft, the testing and early flight experience, the problems encountered on orbit, and the resulting engineering changes are addressed. Spacecraft-level EMC issues associated with the operation of the thrusters in space and in ground testing environments are considered. 10 refs.
