Abstract

Abstract The efficacy of the entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium anisopliae , formulated in granulates of dried mycelium, was tested in field beans infestated by the pea weevil ( Sitona lineatus L.) in greenhouse and in field experiments. The application of M. anisopliae did not significantly result in a reduction of the damage to the root nodules. Similarly, a significant effect on the mortality of S. lineatus was not found. In a separate study on a field bean site, 33% of the plants sampled in the middle of the season contained larvae, pupae and adults with mycosis by a naturally occurring strain of M. anisopliae. Overall 10% of the found insects showed mycosis. The results are discussed in relation to the formulation and differences in virulence between strains of M. anisopliae.
