The reaction between HBrO 2 and bromate was studied in sulfuric acid solution. From the spectral dependence of the absorbance in the region from 400 to 600 nm it is concluded that BrO 2 is an intermediate of the reaction. From the maximum concentration of BrO 2 the equilibrium constant of the BrO 2 /Br 2 O 4 -equilibrium is evaluated; furthermore, a value for the ratio of the rate constants for the HBrO 2 /BrO 3 - -reaction and the disproportionation reaction of HBrO 2 is given.
