Abstract

Abstract Structure, ontogeny, abundance, classification and taxonomic significance of foliar trichomes in 25 genera and 53 species of the Euphorbiaceae are presented. Seven main types and fourteen sub‐types of glandular and eglandular trichomes and stinging emergences are recorded. Inclusion of the genus Bridelia under the tribe Phyllantheae and exclusion of Dalechampia and Tragia from Acalypheae and placing in a separate subtribe Plukenetieae by Bentham & Hooker seems to be justified on the basis of trichome studies. Species‐wise distribution of trichomes is compiled in table 1. Table 2 shows the trichome types in different tribes of Bentham & Hooker.
