Abstract

This is a remarkable collection of 46 papers delivered at a symposium held in Canberra, Australia in August 1964. The material covered is wideranging and most papers are sufficiently detailed and the bibliographies sufficiently extensive so that the book should serve as the standard reference text for some years. Most of the papers are concerned with animal biology, particularly that of sheep, but the techniques described could easily be applied to other experimental models. Thus, it serves to bridge the often wide gap between the knowledge and technology available to the biologist and the needs of the physician-investigator. The opening paper, by Billingham and Silvers, briefly discusses some of the "unsolved problems in the biology of skin." They mention earlier work showing that cutaneous neogenesis and even neogenesis of pilosebaceous units does indeed occur and that it occurs in abundance during antler formation in deer.
