This paper attempts to analyse the immediate reaction of the lung to X-ray therapy and indicates the radiological and clinical features of such an acute reaction which commences within three months of cessation of treatment. This reaction creates a typical syndrome which is responsible for a considerable morbidity and mortality amongst patients undergoing X-ray therapy to or through the lungs.
