Septicemia following prosthetic valve surgery often is assumed to represent infection involving the prosthesis. The source of persistent septicemia in a patient who had aortic valve replacement was not the valve, but the aortic suture line. While reoperation on an infected valve prosthesis is almost certain to result in failure, reoperation on extravalvular sources of sepsis may be successful.
