Coupled modes and the nonlinear Schrödinger equation

Abstract

We study the interaction of co- and contrapropagating modes in the presence of an intensity-dependent refractive index, and find that, under suitable conditions, these processes can be described by the nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation.
