Abstract

The comparative lectrochemical properties of Pt electrodes have been studied in liquid AgBr at 429 ~ and solid AgBr at 300 ~ ~ At all tempera-tures, a significant time range of ideal polarization kinetics was observed. The intrinsic AgBrIPt double-layer capacitance is the same for liquid and solid AgBr and is constant over the solid-state temperature range investigated. In addition, the principal characteristics of Ag submonolayer deposition are the same above and below the AgBr melting point. The results indicate the elec-trochemical properties are determined by an interfacial ion layer whose char-acteristics are independent of the state of the electrolyte. Decreasing double-layer charging rates were observed with decreasing solid-state temperature and are attributed to interface strain due to differential thermal contraction. In a brief communication (1), the authors previously reported the achievement of ideal polarization kinetics at the AgBr]Pt solid-solid interface. While these find-
