The authors report that in almost all developed countries, there is a growing elderly population with a concomitant increase in the number of elderly and disabled drivers. They describe the ways that Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and equipment have the potential to compensate for the effects of aging and impairment and improve the mobility, security, and safety of elderly and disabled travelers (including pedestrians and drivers).
