A study has been made of the adsorption of molecular oxygen, principally at room temperature, on Al(111). On the basis of LEED and CPD measurements supported by symmetry considerations and the calculation of several possible oxygen overlayer structures, it is suggested that the oxygen may form an instep ordered overlayer in tetrahedral sites before substantial incorporation takes place.
