Abstract

A new method for studying the steady-state operation of converter-fed synchronous machines based on Fourier expansion and the harmonic balance is presented. By means of the proposed method the real behavior of the noninstantaneous commutation or of the discontinuous operation, the current ripple in the dc side and in the field winding, can be predicted. An application of this method for a synchronous machine with direct and quadrature damper windings and salient poles connected to a midpoint converter is shown. This method is also useful for the study of other converter configurations and thyristor circuits.
