Ultrastructural examination of glomus cells within a glomangioma has shown them to possess structural features in common with smooth muscle fibers. These cells are believed to represent modified smooth muscle cells. Comparison with component elements of hemangiopericytomas has failed to reveal common structural traits and it is felt that inclusion of the glomangiomas within the category of the hemangiopericytomas is open to question. Evidence of secretory activity, as may be observed within chemoreceptor or chromaffin tissues, has not been detected within the glomus cells.
