Abstract This paper deals with the fracture problem for an elastic strip with an embedded and edge crack under transient thermal stresses. When the crack size is very small compared with the width of the strip, the problem is treated as a crack in a semi-infinite plate. In this study, a ramp function cooling rate will be used at boundary, which is more realistic than the step function. The problem is treated as quasi-static and the temperature dependence of thermoelastic constants are negligible. The solution is basically a superposition of the uncracked problem and the perturbation problem. The perturbation problem is formulated by using the thermal stresses for the uncracked problem, but with an opposite sign as the crack surface traction along the line of the crack. This leads to a singular integral equation, which can be solved numerically. The primary calculations for the stress intensity factor are obtained as a function of time, crack length, locations of the cracks, and the duration of the cooling rate. The temperature and thermal stress distributions in the uncracked problem are also obtained.
