Abstract The pheromone system of Xylocleptes bispinus Duft. (Coleoptera, Scolytidae) During investigations on the pheromone system of Xylocleptes bispinus Duft., many beetles were trapped with infested host material and synthetic baits; flight activity peaked in the evening with the onset of dusk and decreasing temperatures. Host material per se or infested with ♀ only was not attractive or repellent; however, ♂ ‐baits were very attractive to conspecifics. Chemical analysis of both sexes revealed 2‐methyl‐6‐methylen‐7‐octen‐4‐ol (ipsenol) as ♂ ‐specific major pheromone component. Additionally, small amounts of 2‐methyl‐6‐methylen‐7‐octen‐4‐on (ipsenon) were regularly present in ♂ Up to now, both compounds were only known from scolytids infesting conifers. In the field, synthetic ipsenol attracted many X. bispinus. 1‐Octen‐3‐ol, which was found in the headspace of beetle infested material but not in the beetles themselves acted as a repellent and supposedly prevents beetle attack of unsuitable host material.
