Abstract

In the co-oxidation of acetaldehyde and but-2-ene at 393 K, both peracetyl radicals and peracetic acid react with the alkene to form 2,3-epoxybutanes [reactions (1) and (2)]. The proportion of cis- and trans-epoxides >CC< + CH3CO3H [graphic omitted] + CH3CO2H (1), >CC< + CH3CO3· [graphic omitted] +ĊH3+ CO2(2) ormed varies with time, the reaction between the alkene and peracetic acid being stereospecific. Two methods of calculating k1 are used. In one, values of (3·0 ± 0·7)× 10–2 dm3 mol–1 s–1, in the other, values of (3·4 ± 1·0)× 10–2 dm3 mol–1 s–1, are obtained for both alkenes. k2 is found to be (1·2 ± 0·1)× 105 and (7·5 ± 0·1)× 104 dm3 mol–1 s–1 for trans- and cis-but-2-ene, respectively.
