Abstract

A Schlieren optical system has been used to measure the pressure Δp (by its effect on the refractive index) induced in non-polar isotropic liquid dielectrics by the application of an electric field E. All the results agree with the equation which is derived from the theory due to Helmholtz, Δp = E2(-1)(+2)/24π where is the permittivity of the liquid, and not with the equation based on the theory of Livens.
