Abstract

The remainder of this paper is structured as follows. Firstly, we present the current state of hypermedia research as it applies to CB-OHS's, This discussion is cast in terms of a "split" in the hypermedia field and the work that has been accomplished within the context of this split. Secondly, we discuss the motivations for the move toward componentbased hypermedia middleware, especially with regard to bridging this split. Thirdly, we present and discuss an agenda of research issues that must be addressed by open hypermedia researchers wishing to design and implement a CB-OHS. Fourthly, we describe what we feel are necessary preconditions to any attempt by our field to address the issues on our agenda. Lastly, we present our conclusions based on the work presented here.
