Abstract

The properties of salt films on nickel in are studied using artificial pits. A method is described and demonstrated to determine the thickness, electric field strength, and porosity of the salt film. Field strengths are approximately −400 V/cm, indicating that a migration process is controlling the transport of nickel ions across the salt film. The salt film porosity was about 0.001. The thickness of the salt film varies with potential and crevice depth and reaches a maximum thickness of about 11 μm. The large potential drop across the salt film results in a shift in pH at the metal/salt interface in the basic direction.
