Open methods of calculation of the temperature behaviour of regenerators require an inordinate number of cycles of operation to be simulated before dynamic equilibrium is achieved in the case where the reduced length ∧ > 10 and where the reduced period Π is such that ∧/π > 3. It might be considered that closed methods might be appropriate here since equilibrium behaviour is calculated directly. In this paper, it is shown that Iliffe's closed method breaks down in these circumstances and that extrapolative methods of computation must be adapted.
