Abstract The steam volatile leaf oils of Melaleuca cordata Turcz., M. halmaturorum F. Muell. ex Miq. subsp. cymbifolia (Benth.) Barlow, M. incana R.Br., M. lanceolata Otto subsp. planifolia Barlow, M. rhaphiophylla Schauer, M. sheathiana W. Fitzg, M. sp.aff. sheathiana and M. uncinata R.Br. sensu lato were analysed by GC‐MS. The oils were entirely terpenoid with the exception of M. halmaturorum var. cymbifolia which contained small amounts of baeckeol. Whilst 1,8‐cineole was a major constituent of most oils, terpinen‐4‐ol was the chief constituent of M. uncinata oil.
