Abstract

In many types of chromosomal work the need for chromosome banding nomenclature is obvious. A well-developed nomenclature system already exists for human chromosomes and in the present communication an attempt is made to adapt this system to the chromosomes of the laboratory rat. The Giemsa bands of the rat karyotype are described and numbered and examples are given of the application of the system to marker chromosomes from induced rat sarcomas. The use of chromosome banding, especially in relation to cancer chromosomes, is discussed.
