A poly[styrene-co-(divinyl benzene)] resin (XAD-4) functionalized with N-hydroxyethylethylenediamine ligands has been synthesized and its application for the concentration and separation of trace amounts of metal ions was studied. Metal sorption studies were carried out with CuII, NiII, ZnII, CoII, FeII, CdII, PbII, MnII and CrIII as a function of pH. Trace amounts of these metal ions were quantitatively retained on the resin and recovered by eluting with 1 mol l–1 hydrochloric acid. The resin was found to be selective for PbII and CuII, and their separation from other metal ions in the binary mixture was carried out effectively. Metal ion concentrations were determined using AAS.
