This paper investigates models of the creation of new biotechnology firms (NBFs). Whereas institutional and resource variables have the predicted facilitative effects on NBF founding rates, the effects of density, the number of organizations are opposite to accepted ecological views. The critical role of human capital in creating competition for resources in the population.
