Abstract

The Indus script used by the Harappan civilization around 2600- 1600 BC remains essentially undeciphered, but in recent years considerable progress has been made in understanding it. Evidence of possible derivation of Brahmi from Indus opens up many lines of attack for a cryptologist. This paper summarizes some general considerations that the cryptologist must keep in mind in a study of the script. It also presents a brief overview of the current state of decipherment.
