These observations are consistent with the hypothesis that impaired gut-barrier function is responsible for endotoxemia occurring during cardiopulmonary bypass. It is unclear whether increased mucosal permeability and mucosal acidosis are causally related phenomena or simply independent markers of damage to gut epithelium.
