An excitant action of acetylcholine on thalamic neurones and its relationship to synaptic transmission was described in the preceding paper (McCance, Phillis & Westerman, 1968).Evidence in support of the suggestion that acetylcholine has a transmitter function was obtained by comparing the pharmacology of synaptic excitation with that of iontophoretically applied acetylcholine. The results of a simultaneously conducted in- vestigation into the actions of various cholinomimetic agents, and potentiators and anta- gonists of acetylcholine on thalamic neurones are presented in this report.
