The successive electrical transients caused by system faults and subsequent switching operations associated with the widely practiced technique of automatic high-speed reclosing give rise to mechanical stresses in nearby turbine-generators. Depending upon many factors, these stresses may exceed the endurance limit of certain machine parts and thus cause slight or severe fatigue damage which is cumulative over the life of machines.
